Plot Summary Utilizing a time travelling espresso bar fueled by the rare Coffea Arabica Mystericus bean, the trio traverses various epochs, including the Late Cretaceous period, Ancient Egypt, and 17th-century Amsterdam. They are pursued by Dr. Kalt, a bureaucrat from the Temporal Regulation Authority who seeks to eliminate historical variables and impose “predictable mediocrity” on the universe. The journey culminates at the 247th Martian Olympus Games on Mars, where Hoffskeller reunites with his former partner, Carmen Bruvik, to prevent the standardization of reality.

Themes The novel explores the conflict between bureaucratic order and necessary entropy, often referred to within the text as the “Hoffskeller Constant” (the theory that productivity is proportional to well-engineered chaos). Additional themes include the preservation of artisanal quality against standardization and the logistics of time travel.
