The Best Ground Coffee for a Reusable K-Cup (and How to Stop Weak Cups)

The best ground coffee for a reusable K-Cup is a fresh medium or medium-dark roast, filled loosely to the line (about 15 grams in Keurig's original filter) and brewed on a small cup setting. Most weak pod coffee comes from too little coffee for too big a cup, not from the coffee itself. We sell no pods, but our ground coffee works in a reusable one.

It is a common way to brew: 23% of past-day coffee drinkers had coffee made with a single cup brewer, according to fall 2025 figures from the National Coffee Association. We roast one coffee in cast iron on our family farm in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and this guide covers how to get a full, strong cup from a reusable pod, whoever roasted the coffee.

Why reusable pods taste weak

A reusable pod holds very little coffee. The original Keurig My K-Cup filter holds about 2.7 tablespoons, which Coffee Habitat measured at roughly 14.5 to 16 grams when filled to just under the rim. Filters vary by brand, and many people use less: Majesty Coffee says the coffee in a reusable filter typically runs 9 to 12 grams, depending on taste.

Standard strength is about 13 grams of coffee per 8 ounces of water, the SCA golden cup ratio behind our estimate of about 35 eight-ounce cups per pound. Our own starting point, two tablespoons per six ounces of water, lands in about the same place for a 6-ounce cup. Here is what one full filter can do at each cup setting:

Cup settingCoffee for standard strength (estimate)One full filter, about 15 g
6 ozabout 10 gMore than enough: a strong cup
8 ozabout 13 gAbout right
10 ozabout 16 gRight at the limit
12 ozabout 20 gAbout a quarter short: a weak cup

Estimates at about 55 grams of coffee per liter of water. A smaller filter, or one that is not filled to the line, falls short sooner.

Time works against you too. A pod brewer pushes water through quickly, so the grounds have less time to give up their flavor than in a drip basket, and Coffee Habitat found the brew runs slightly cooler than drip. Medium and darker roasts give up their flavor more readily than light roasts, which helps in a short brew. A 12-ounce mug from one pod tastes thin, even with good coffee.

The fix is simple: use the 6 or 8 ounce setting. For a big mug, brew two small cups into it with a fresh fill each time. More in coffee to water ratio and how many cups of coffee in a pound.

How to fill a reusable K-Cup

  1. Spoon the ground coffee in up to the fill line marked inside the filter. Tap the side once to settle the grounds level, and do not heap it above the line.
  2. Do not pack it. Keurig's My K-Cup instructions say not to. Packed coffee stops the water, spills grounds into the holder and can clog the hole at the bottom.
  3. Leave a little room at the top. Fresh coffee still holds gas from roasting, and it foams up when hot water hits it. That bloom is a good sign, but it needs space, or it can push grounds over the top and clog the filter.
  4. Wipe the rim and close the lid all the way. A stray ground on the rim keeps the lid from sealing.
  5. Brew on the 6 or 8 ounce setting.
  6. Empty and rinse the filter after each cup. Spent grounds work in a compost pile. Now and then, scrub the mesh with a soft brush so oils do not slow the flow.

What grind works in a reusable pod

Corner Coffee Store notes that Keurig suggests a coarse grind, like the one used for a French press, because grounds that are too fine can clog the filter and overflow. Coffee Habitat and Majesty Coffee lean finer, medium to medium-fine, because coarse grounds give up too little flavor in the short brew.

Our ground coffee is one medium-fine grind that works for every brew method, a reusable pod included, as long as you fill it loosely and do not pack it. If your machine runs slow or grounds spill over, use a little less coffee, filling to just below the line, and check that the needle and the filter mesh are clean.

If you grind at home, order whole bean and set your grinder to suit your machine, a touch coarser if it runs slow. Ground coffee fades faster than whole bean once the bag is open, so buy an amount you will finish in a few weeks. More on that choice in whole bean vs. ground coffee.

What a reusable pod costs per cup

A full filter holds about 15 grams, and a pound is about 454 grams, so a pound fills about 30 pods. Here is the cost per pod at that dose:

CoffeePricePods (estimate)Per pod, one-time / subscription (estimate)
Grocery store ground coffee, US average, Sep 2026$9.33/lb30 per lb$0.31
The Hoff, ground, 1 lb$25 / $2230$0.83 / $0.73
Big Hoff Bag, ground, 2 lb$34 / $3060$0.57 / $0.50
Queen Hoff, ground, 3.5 lb$60 / $52105$0.57 / $0.50
King Hoff, ground, 7 lb$105 / $95211$0.50 / $0.45

Estimates at 15 grams per pod, counting whole pods only, before shipping. The grocery figure is the government's average price for 100% ground roast coffee (BLS). To compare pre-filled pods, divide the box price by the count. Our guide to cost per cup of coffee covers drip, the coffee shop and the rest.

Which size of ours to buy for a reusable pod

A fresh medium roast from the grocery store will work in a reusable pod and costs less per cup. If you want decaf for an evening cup, flavored coffee, a light roast or the convenience of pre-filled pods, we are not the right roaster, and that is fine.

What we make is 100% Colombian Supremo Arabica (Supremo is Colombia's grade for the largest beans by screen size), roasted medium-dark in the German Norwegian style: one roast that releases beans at different points, so each batch holds a spread of roast levels. We roast in a cast iron drum roaster in small batches on a regular schedule, and it ships within days of roasting in nearly all cases. Customers describe it as smooth, bold and low in acid, and good black. More in coffee you can drink black.

For a reusable pod, choose ground:

  • The Hoff, ground, 1 lb, $25: about 30 pods (estimate), about a month for one pod drinker at a cup a day.
  • Big Hoff Bag, ground, 2 lb, $34: about 60 pods (estimate), for two pod drinkers or two cups a day, at a lower price per pod.

Keep the coffee in an airtight container, like a Mason jar, in a cool, dark cupboard. We advise against the freezer: it brings in moisture, and moisture ruins coffee.

Shipping is free on orders of $50 or more, by USPS to US addresses. Two ground Big Hoff Bags in one order come to $64, since the second bag is $4 off, and ship free. The Big Hoff Bag also comes as a monthly subscription at $30 a delivery plus shipping, or weekly or every 2 weeks, with a two-delivery minimum; you manage deliveries online through a secure emailed link.

Reusable K-Cup questions

Can I use regular ground coffee in a reusable K-Cup?

Yes. Regular ground coffee works if you fill the filter loosely to the line and do not pack it. A very fine grind is the most likely to run slow or overflow; if that happens, use a little less coffee.

How much coffee goes in a reusable K-Cup?

Fill it to the line. The original Keurig My K-Cup holds about 2.7 tablespoons, roughly 14.5 to 16 grams, and filters vary by brand. That is enough for a full-strength 6 or 8 ounce cup (estimate), not a 12-ounce mug.

Why is my reusable K-Cup coffee weak?

Usually the cup setting is too big for the amount of coffee in the filter. Fill to the line, brew on the 6 or 8 ounce setting, and for a large mug brew two small cups with a fresh fill each time. A very coarse grind can also make it weak.

Why does my reusable K-Cup overflow?

The common causes are a packed or overfilled filter, a lid that is not fully closed, a very fine grind, fresh coffee foaming up as it blooms, or a clogged needle or mesh. Fill a little below the line, close the lid all the way and keep the filter and needle clean.

Do you sell K-Cups or pods?

No. If you use a reusable pod, our ground coffee works in it. We make one medium-dark coffee, with no decaf and no flavors.

A stronger cup from the machine you already own

Fill to the line, do not pack it, pick a small cup setting and brew twice for a big mug: that is most of it. Questions about your brewer are welcome on our contact page, and there are more coffee guides for every other way to brew.
