Hoffskeller is a repurposed farm cellar combining the Old Norse word “Hoff” for farm and the German word “skeller” for cellar. In Germany, a Ratskeller was a repurposed cellar in a government building (Rathaus). These were used by government employees for storing (and drinking) wine, and often the venue for back room policy discussions.
