How Long Does a 2 lb Bag of Coffee Last? A Chart for Every Bag Size and Habit

A 2 lb bag of coffee makes about 70 eight-ounce cups, so at 2 cups a day it lasts about 5 weeks. That is an estimate at standard strength, about 35 cups per pound by the Specialty Coffee Association's golden cup ratio. Brew stronger, pour bigger mugs or share the pot, and it goes faster. The charts below cover every bag size and habit.

We roast one coffee in our family barn in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, in sizes from a half pound to 20 pounds. Here is the math for each.

Cups in each bag size

SizeNet weight8 oz cups (est.)12 oz mugs (est.)One-time price
Little Hoff1/2 lb (8 oz)1812$15
The Hoff1 lb (16 oz)3523$25
Big Hoff jar, whole bean24.8 oz5436$35
Big Hoff jar, ground30.2 oz6644$42
Big Hoff Bag2 lb (32 oz)7047$34
Queen Hoff3.5 lb (56 oz)12282$60
King Hoff7 lb (112 oz)245163$105
Bulk20 lb (320 oz)700467$250

How we got these: the golden cup ratio is about 55 grams of coffee per liter of water, or about 13 grams per 8 oz cup, which comes to about 35 cups per pound. Our FAQ uses a kitchen rule, two tablespoons per six ounces of water, and plans on "about one pound for every forty to fifty six-ounce cups," or 80 to 100 small cups from 2 lb. Driftaway Coffee's help page counts 64 cups from 2 lb at a 1:16 ratio. So 64 to 70 eight-ounce cups is fair. More in how many cups of coffee are in a pound.

How long each size lasts

Read the 2 lb row: one cup a day lasts more than two months, two cups lasts five weeks, and four cups a day, say two people at two cups each, finishes it in about two and a half weeks.

If a bag is gone in ten days, order the next size up.

Mug size and strength

These charts count an 8 oz cup, but many mugs hold 12 ounces or more. A 12 oz mug is one and a half cups, so a 2 lb bag makes about 47 mugs: about 47 days at one mug a day, or 23 days at two (estimates).

Strength works the same way. Our FAQ's starting point is two tablespoons per six ounces of water. If you like three, you use half again as much coffee, and the bag lasts about two thirds as long. Or count scoops: a 2 lb bag holds about 90 two-tablespoon scoops (estimate), so six a day lasts about 15 days.

Big bags and freshness

Coffee does not go bad the way milk does. Our FAQ: "It loses aroma and flavor over time." It also gives the window: "Whole bean holds well for several weeks after opening. Ground coffee is best within a few weeks. Sealed and unopened, it keeps considerably longer." So buy an amount you will finish within a few weeks of opening it.

With a big bag, open as little of it as you can: "Keep the bag closed and stored in a cool, dark place, and pour what you need into a smaller jar for daily use." See Mason jar coffee storage. We don't recommend the freezer ("The freezer introduces moisture"), though some people do freeze sealed portions.

Whole bean holds up longer than ground once opened, so if you grind at home, make a big order whole bean. The clock also starts close to the roast: we roast in small batches on a regular schedule, and it ships within days of roasting in nearly all cases. More in how long coffee beans last.

Matching a delivery schedule to your habit

If you drink about the same amount every week, a subscription keeps it coming: weekly, every 2 weeks or monthly, at a lower price on every size except the Mason jar, which is one-time only. Subscriptions have a two-delivery minimum, and you manage deliveries online through a secure emailed link: skip, pause, move a date earlier or change sizes.

A picker, in 8 oz cups a day (estimates, a month counted as 30 days):

Cups a dayA size and schedule that fitsPrice per deliveryCups a day it supplies
1The Hoff, 1 lb, monthly$22 plus shippingabout 1.2
2Big Hoff Bag, 2 lb, monthly$30 plus shippingabout 2.3
3 to 4Queen Hoff, 3.5 lb, monthly$52, ships freeabout 4
4 to 5Two Big Hoff Bags, monthly$56 ($30 + $26), ships freeabout 4.7
6 to 8King Hoff, 7 lb, monthly$95, ships freeabout 8
9 to 10Two Big Hoff Bags, every 2 weeks$56, ships free10
20 or moreBulk, 20 lb, monthly$230, ships freeabout 23

Two people at three cups each is 6 cups a day, about 180 a month. The King makes about 245, so pausing one delivery every few months keeps the coffee from piling up. Renewal shipping is figured from the subscription items alone, and renewals currently ship free when those items reach $50, which is why two bags on one schedule can beat one bag twice as often. If your habit comes and goes, buy one-time instead. More in is a coffee subscription worth it.

Is buying bigger cheaper?

Mostly, but not at every step. One-time, the price per pound falls from $30 for the Little Hoff to $17 for the Big Hoff Bag, $15 for the King and $12.50 for Bulk ($11.50 on a subscription), or from about 86 cents an 8 oz cup for a one-time Little Hoff to about 33 cents for Bulk on a subscription (estimates at 35 cups per pound). Every size, one-time and subscription, is side by side in what a cup of coffee costs at home.

Bought one-time, the Queen costs a hair more per ounce than the Big Hoff Bag ($1.071 against $1.062), so bigger is not always cheaper. Extra units of the same size and grind in one order are discounted automatically: $4 off each extra Big Hoff Bag and $10 off each extra Queen or King. Other sizes, Bulk included, get none. Two Big Hoff Bags one-time come to $64, or $16 a pound, as two closed bags. Shipping is free at $50 or more, so a single Bag pays USPS shipping and two ship free.

“I just ordered a couple of two pound bags.”
Karyn H, X, September 2026

Is bulk worth it? Only if you will drink it while it is good. Bulk is our lowest price per pound, but at 4 cups a day it would last a household nearly six months. At home, the King Hoff suits a house pouring 6 or more cups a day; it lasts about six weeks. Bulk fits offices and crews, though a small office can start with a 2 lb bag; see office coffee without a contract.

“Ordered a 2lb bag for my office. Brewed some this morning and it was fantastic!”

Questions about bag sizes

How many ounces are in a 2 lb bag of coffee?

32 ounces. Our Big Hoff Bag holds 32 oz net of whole bean or ground coffee, about 70 eight-ounce cups or 47 twelve-ounce mugs at standard strength (estimates).

How many scoops are in a 2 lb bag of coffee?

About 90 two-tablespoon scoops. That estimate assumes about 5 grams of ground coffee per level tablespoon, and a 2 lb bag is about 907 grams. At our FAQ's two tablespoons per six ounces of water, that is about 90 six-ounce cups.

How long does a 5 lb bag of coffee last?

About 175 eight-ounce cups (estimate): about 88 days at 2 cups a day, 58 at 3 and 44 at 4. We don't sell a 5 lb size; our nearest are the Queen Hoff (3.5 lb) and the King Hoff (7 lb).

Is the Big Hoff jar 2 lb?

No. The half-gallon Mason jar holds 24.8 oz of whole bean ($35) or 30.2 oz of ground ($42), and it is sold one-time only. Ground coffee packs tighter than whole beans, so the same jar holds more of it. The 2 lb size is the Big Hoff Bag.

Picking your size

At two or three cups a day, the Big Hoff Bag (2 lb, $34 one-time, or $30 monthly) lasts three to five weeks. At one cup a day, The Hoff (1 lb, $25) is the better fit; a 2 lb bag would stay open for ten weeks. Trying us for the first time? The Hoff or the Little Hoff (1/2 lb, $15) is plenty. If you drink coffee only now and then, buy small, from us or anyone. And if you want decaf, flavored coffee, a light roast or pods, we don't make them, and a roaster who does will serve you better.

We make one coffee: 100% Colombian Supremo Arabica, roasted medium-dark in the German Norwegian style in cast iron, in a barn in our family since 1944. Customers describe it as smooth, bold and low in acid, and good black. We ship by USPS to US addresses, and orders typically go out within a few business days. See more coffee guides.
