Is a Coffee Subscription Worth It? A Plain Answer From a One-Coffee Roaster

A coffee subscription is worth it if you already know the coffee you like and drink it at a steady pace. It is not worth it if you want a different coffee every month or drink coffee off and on. Our own subscription saves $1 to $20 a delivery, depending on the size, and every subscription has a two-delivery minimum.

We roast one coffee in cast iron in our family's barn in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and sell it one bag at a time or on a schedule.

Two kinds of coffee subscription

Discovery boxes send a different coffee each time, picked by a roaster or by a service that buys from many roasters. A coffee website that tracked prices across more than 30 services in early 2026 found they typically cost $14 to $22 per 12-ounce bag, roughly $19 to $29 a pound by our arithmetic. If the fun is in trying something new, choose this kind.

Replenishment subscriptions send the same coffee on a schedule, usually for a little less than buying one bag at a time. You are paying to never run out of a coffee you already like. That is the only kind we offer, because we make one coffee.

What ours costs

Every size except the Mason jar comes on a subscription, whole bean or ground. Prices are per delivery.

SizeOne-timeSubscriptionYou saveOne unit ships free on renewal?
Little Hoff, 1/2 lb$15$14$1No
The Hoff, 1 lb$25$22$3No
Big Hoff Bag, 2 lb$34$30$4No, but two Bags do
Queen Hoff, 3.5 lb$60$52$8Yes
King Hoff, 7 lb$105$95$10Yes
Bulk, 20 lb$250$230$20Yes
Big Hoff jar, half gallon$35 whole bean, $42 groundOne-time onlyn/an/a

Renewal shipping is figured from the subscription items alone. Currently a renewal of $50 or more ships free by USPS; under $50, each renewal pays shipping. Two Big Hoff Bags on one subscription come to more than $50, so they ship free. Per eight-ounce cup, before any shipping, a subscription costs about $0.80 for the Little Hoff, $0.43 for a Big Hoff Bag and $0.33 for Bulk (estimates at 35 cups per pound).

Two things to know: on our product page the monthly subscription is selected by default, so for a single bag, choose One-time order before adding it to your cart. And when your cart holds a subscription, an add-on offered at checkout may join it as a recurring item, so check each one before you pay.

How it works

  • Pick a schedule: weekly, every 2 weeks or monthly. Subscriptions in one order share one schedule.
  • Billing: your card is charged on that schedule at the current subscription price, plus shipping when the renewal is under $50.
  • Managing it: enter your email on our Manage Subscription page and we email you a secure link, no password needed. There you can skip or pause deliveries, move your next delivery earlier (not later; a pause does that job), change sizes, and update your card or address.
  • The minimum: every subscription has a two-delivery minimum, and your first order counts as the first. A pause does not count toward it.

The full rules are in section 3 of our Terms of Service. We roast in small batches on a regular schedule, and subscription coffee ships within days of roasting in nearly all cases.

When it's worth it, and when it isn't

A subscription is worth it when:

  • You have tried the coffee and would buy it again anyway.
  • You drink at a steady pace, like a pot every morning, so deliveries line up with your cupboard.
  • Your renewal reaches $50, so shipping is free and the whole discount is yours. With us that means a Queen, a King, Bulk, or two Big Hoff Bags.
  • You would rather not think about it. Not running out may be worth more to you than the dollars saved.

“I’ve got it on auto ship every month. I love this coffee!!!!”

It is not worth it when:

  • You want variety. A discovery box will make you happier than we can.
  • You drink coffee off and on or travel a lot. Bags pile up, and a one-time order when you run low is simpler.
  • You haven't tasted it yet. Start with a one-time Little Hoff ($15) or The Hoff ($25) and subscribe once you know.
  • Price per cup is all that matters. Ground coffee at the grocery store averaged $9.33 a pound in September 2026 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), about $0.27 a cup by our estimate. Fresh roasted coffee costs more, ours included; the math is in what a cup of coffee costs at home.
  • You want decaf, flavored coffee, pods or a light roast. We don't make them, and a roaster who does will serve you better.

An honest note on small sizes: a single Little Hoff or Hoff on subscription saves $1 or $3, but each renewal pays shipping. A one-time Queen Hoff ships free and works out to $17.14 a pound, less than The Hoff's $22 subscription price before shipping. The trade is freshness: at one cup a day, 3.5 pounds lasts about four months (estimate), longer than an opened bag stays at its best. See how long coffee beans last.

“My husband tried a sample of coffee at a farmers market and decided to purchase a small one to take home. Since then he’s told me that I’m officially banned from buying coffee at the grocery store! THIS MORNING I signed up for a monthly coffee delivery with Der Hoffskeller…”

Picking a schedule

Match the delivery to how much you actually drink. At about 35 eight-ounce cups per pound (standard strength, the SCA golden cup ratio), each plan roughly supports:

PlanCoffee per monthFits about (estimate)
The Hoff, monthly1 lb1 cup a day
Big Hoff Bag, monthly2 lb2 cups a day
Queen Hoff, monthly3.5 lb4 cups a day
Big Hoff Bag, every 2 weeksabout 4.3 lb5 cups a day
King Hoff, monthly7 lb8 cups a day

If you brew stronger or pour big mugs, go up a step. When in doubt, start smaller: you can move a delivery earlier when you run low, but not later. For the full math, see how long a bag of coffee lasts and how many cups of coffee are in a pound.

If a delivery takes you more than a few weeks to finish, whole bean holds up longer once opened (whole bean vs. ground coffee explains why). Keep it in an airtight container, like a Mason jar, in a cool, dark cupboard, not the freezer, which introduces moisture.

Where our coffee fits

If you drink a medium-dark coffee every morning, ours is an easy one to put on a schedule. It is 100% Colombian Supremo Arabica (Supremo is Colombia's grade for the largest beans by screen size), roasted medium-dark in the German Norwegian style: one roast that releases beans at different points, so each batch holds a spread of roast levels. We roast it in a cast iron drum roaster, in a barn that has been in our family since 1944.

Customers describe it as smooth, bold and low in acid, and good black. Ground is one medium-fine grind that works for every brew method, espresso included. If you grind at home, order whole bean. Our reviews page holds more than 260 reviews, and smooth is the word reviewers use most.

Good places to start: a Big Hoff Bag every month for about two cups a day (each renewal pays shipping), two Big Hoff Bags every month for a bigger household (together they ship free), or a Queen Hoff every month, which ships free on its own. Or try it once first with a one-time pound of ground or pound of whole bean.

Questions about coffee subscriptions

Can I pause or skip a delivery?

Yes. On the Manage Subscription page, reached through a secure emailed link, you can pause for typically one to four billing cycles; one cycle skips a single delivery. Billing resumes automatically on the date shown, and a pause does not count toward the two-delivery minimum.

Can I change sizes?

Yes. On the same page you can swap, add or remove sizes. You see the new recurring total, with shipping recalculated, before you confirm, and the change applies from your next delivery.

Is there a minimum?

Yes, two deliveries, and your first order counts as the first. The minimum comes with the discount: without it, anyone could subscribe for the lower price and stop after one bag. After your second paid delivery, you can cancel on the Manage Subscription page.

Do renewals ship free?

Currently, yes, when the subscription items alone come to $50 or more: a Queen Hoff, a King Hoff, Bulk, or two Big Hoff Bags. Below $50, each renewal pays USPS shipping. One-time items in your first order do not count toward the $50 on renewals. We ship to US addresses only.

Can I subscribe to the Mason jar?

No. The Big Hoff half-gallon jar is one-time only, $35 whole bean or $42 ground. For regular deliveries, choose one of the bag sizes.

The plain answer

Subscribe to a coffee you already love and drink every day, at a size that ships free, and it saves money and a trip to the store. If you like variety or drink coffee now and then, buy one bag at a time. For more help, see our other coffee guides.
